How to Do Competitor Backlink Analysis for SEO: A Repeatable Workflow

A useful competitor backlink analysis moves from SERP selection to source classification, gap analysis and prioritized outreach. The spreadsheet is only the beginning.

Step 1: define the SERP set

Choose a focused group of keywords and collect the domains and pages that rank consistently. This avoids mixing unrelated competitors from different search intents.

If you are analyzing a category page, compare other category pages—not just entire domains.

Step 2: export referring domains for several competitors

Use at least three to five competitors so one unusual profile does not distort the analysis. Collect source domain, source URL, target URL, anchor and link type where available.

Deduplicate by referring domain before drawing conclusions about breadth.

Step 3: classify and score sources

Group links into editorial, guest contribution, PR, resources, directories, partnerships, reviews and other clear categories. Then score relevance, legitimacy, traffic and repeatability.

This quickly separates opportunities from noise.

Step 4: identify gaps and common wins

A gap is not simply a domain that links to competitors but not you. The useful gap is a source you can realistically earn because you have a comparable or stronger reason to be included.

Common sources across multiple competitors often deserve the highest priority.

Step 5: turn findings into campaigns

If competitors earn links with data studies, build a better study. If they appear in association resources, pursue the memberships or contributions you genuinely qualify for. If guest posts dominate, develop expert topics those publications have not covered well.

Use digital PR and guest posts as tactics only where the evidence supports them.
